For buildings, it is important to try to preserve the value and protect the embodied carbon as much as possible. See the adapted hierarchy here as a guide. 

Also note that in 2009 the Province of BC committed to the Canada-wide Action Plan for Extended Producer Responsibility where systems would be developed for Construction and Demolition materials.

Municipal leaders -City of Victoria’s deconstruction bylaw, District of Saanich’s system to encourage moving homes, Victoria/Vancouver/North Vancouver/Richmond and others  -mandating deconstruction for some buildings
