All levels of government should be taking action and developing comprehensive Zero Waste Plans. The different levels of government should be collaborating to each use the tools that they have to work together to move towards Zero Waste.
Local Governments
- Check out our municipal toolkit designed to help local governments develop Zero Waste plans.
- Also see the Climate Caucus Councillor’s Handbook. Climate Caucus also has a Motions Library for members to help councillors move solutions forward.
- One Earth–a guide for local governments on the sharing economy
- Consumption Based Emission Inventories -get the real picture of our carbon footprints. We need this at the local government, provincial and federal scales. Check out the EcoCity Footprint Tool. Several communities have already joined the EcoCity peer network.
- C40 Cities has info on how to cut a city’s consumption-based emissions.
- Local governments also push for change -see the record of Zero Waste and Circular Economy-related motions here.
Provincial and Federal Governments
These levels of governments should have comprehensive Zero Waste/Circular Economy strategies that drive policy changes similar to what is happening in the EU. This should include banning toxic products and ingredients, limiting plastics, mandating the Right to Repair and bringing in comprehensive extended producer responsibility.
Basing strategies on models like the Zero Waste Hierarchy, Natural Step and Doughnut Economics can ensure plans protect people and the environment.
